Chapter two
A Cucco sounded that dawn had arrived, but didn't wake Link from his slumber. He was dreaming of a time when he was a child, and would go adventuring in the forest near Medoro Castle with his brother. Varden never went too far, only enough to get a little fresh air. But of course, Link never cared. Link just went on through the woods without him. Such was the case in this dream.
Varden went back to the castle after only 15 minutes of strolling. Link waved him on inside and continued to venture further into the woods. He hadn't been back this far in ages! He could tell, too, as everything looked so different.
Link shifted in his sleep as he heard a child's giggle in his dream. Looking for the child, he spotted a path that wasn't there before. Taking a step towards the path, there was another giggle. It was distinctly a girl's giggle, Link could tell.
Nursemaids and others had always told Link of faeries, and of course the elven people of the woods, but it was strange now that he was dreaming of them. He never did, before. Several faeries lined the path; their auras were pretty colors of red, blue, and green. Link hadn't time to even think on the faeries when there was another giggle, so he didn't even try.
Following the pathway led Link deeper into the forest than he had ever gone before. He didn't recognize this place; it looked like a fortress out here. There was a tree stump, and some kind of pedestal with the sacred symbol, the Triforce, on it. Turning around to look at the way he had come, Link saw nothing but a forest maze. Even though this alarmed him a great deal, Link kept calm. That is, until there was a melody.
"Hi Link. It's been a very long time," a green haired girl said, after she finished the last note of her song on her ocarina. She was just a child.
"What? You're not frightened, are you?" she asked, because the expression on Link's face clearly showed that he was bewildered. "Come now, it's all right."
"Oh it is, is it?" Link managed to stammer. "Who are you?"
"I'm Saria. Sage of the Forest. And you, dear Link, are a descendant of the Heroes of Time and The Princesses of Destiny. Have you not learned of them? Or of the Triforce?"
"No, Saria, I can't say that I have," said Link, thinking that all of this was purely in his dream.
Saria, reading his thoughts, quickly said, "Oh, this is quite real, I assure you." Link was taken aback by this, of course. "The Goddesses Din, Nayru, and Farore left a relic consisting of 3 golden triangles called the Triforce here in this world of Hylia after they created it. Din is the Goddess of Power. Nayru is the Goddess of Wisdom. Farore is the Goddess of Courage. Each Goddess left a triangle, and upon leaving this world, the triangles bonded together to form the Triforce."
"What do the Goddesses have to do with me?" Link was still puzzled.
The answer came with a slight laugh. "Why, Everything! Just listen. The Triforce, when touched by the hands of someone who has the three Forces in balance, grants the wishes of that person's heart. But when touched by someone who was not in balance, the Triforce breaks into its three separate pieces. The person who touches the Triforce will end up with the piece symbolizing the Force that they hold in the highest regard."
Link tried to interrupt again, but Saria would not have it. "Be patient, Link! I come from a time when Hylia was peaceful, and I knew the first Hero of Time and Princess of Destiny. Their names were Link and Zelda. Zelda was, is, and always will be a Hyrulian. The Zelda of my time, was Princess of all Hylia, as Hyrule Kingdom was the only one back then. Now, Hyrule still is a Kingdom, but several others have been founded. All of these Royal Families are related somehow to the original Hyrulian Family. But always, Link and Zelda are to be together."
Link knew he was in for a long story, so he sat down in the soft grass and looked quietly at Saria with wonder in his eyes as she told the rest of her tale of the legendary imprisoning war.
"The original couple was born into the same peaceful time as I was, but it was abruptly cut short by the then King of the Gerudo. The Gerudo race was a race of female thieves that had lived long ago. Once every 100 years a lone male was born into the Gerudo race, and as was custom, made king. The most infamous of all the Gerudo kings who had ever reigned was a man named Ganondorf Dragmire, but to be mearly king of one race was not enough for this man. Ganondorf desired the world and sought the triforce to no end.
The keepers of the final key to the sacred holding place of the triforce were the then royal family of Hyrule. Ganondorf came to Hyrule under the guise of friendship and peace in an effort to steal it from them. Zelda and her nursemaid, Impa, sensed the evil in this man no one else had. Alas, nothing helped her father, King Harkinian, to see that Ganondorf was not a good man. This mistake in judge of character on his part proved fatal to him and almost destroyed his country.
Impa was of the Sheikah race, a race that was once thought to have been killed out. But, even now, they are alive and well. They serve the Royal Families of Hylia as they always have. Zelda and Impa, as I told you, had foreseen the wicked acts this man would come to do, and by a struck of luck or perhaps destiny itself had sent a young boy to them one day." Saria stopped for a minute and looked down, "That young boy's name also was Link. He was a courageous child and fearlessly fought to stop Ganondorf from obtaining the triforce, but in the end he just wasnt strong enough to stop him.
Link slept under the care of the sage of light, Rauru, while in Hyrule seven dark years had passed. Ganondorf, with the powers bestowed upon him by the triforce, ruled the world with an iron first. He self-proclaimed himself the King of Evil, and lived up to this title every bit. The time soon came for Link to awaken and take back Hyrule from the evil tyrant. He re-awakened the 7 seven sages, and with their help, Ganondorf and the triforce were sealed within the sacred realm."
Saria took a long breath and looked at Link, "I and the other Sages, helped to protect the couple from harm on their adventures. I have been granted the form of a faerie to be able to accompany you, as well."
Link sat and pondered for a moment, starting to doubt that this was a dream any longer. "But what's going on now that involves me, Saria?"
Saria took a deep breath and sighed, "The Princess of Hyrule now is Zelda Harkinian. Her nursemaid is named Impa, who is of the Sheikan race. The names are setting themselves up for Desinty already, Link. I will take you to Zelda. She will have figured out more."
Link startled himself into waking from the dream, finally. He promptly got out of bed and dressed for the day. As he finished, he heard the giggle again. "Tee hee! Link! You really thought it was a dream?"
"My Goddesses! What is this?" Link exclaimed.
"Don't tell me you've forgotten already! I told you, the Goddesses granted me the body of a faerie!" came the voice.
Link stammered as he saw a faerie with a green aura, "Saria?"
"Yes, silly! Now let's get going! We've got quite a lot of things to talk about!"
