Chapter one

Medoro. A nice place with a fair monarchy. Everyone loved the King and Queen Aleron, so the birth of their second child link was warmly received by all. Link and his brother grew up privileged and carefree. They were also as different as night and day. Varden was a passive boy with red hair and blue eyes. Link, on the other hand, was a rambunctious child with blonde hair and green eyes who loved to be the center of attention. Even though they were both the princes of Medoro, politics and succession to the throne meant little to them. Would it mean anything to any kid?

Growing up, Link and his brother Varden were rivals at everything. Link was superior to his brother with a sword and in strength, but Varden became a master of archery and strategy, being more mature and having the self-control his brother lacked. The years passed on; Link and his brother grew older, and their father had certainly not gotten any younger. It was time for him to announce who would succeed him on the throne. That time sprung up suddenly one summer night.

As Link and Varden walked into the room, their father looked up from his books and smiled warmly at them before letting out a hacking cough into a handkerchief. He then forced himself to stand up and look his sons over. His eyes passed over Link before letting out a sigh, and then came to Varden with a smile. His smile diminished as he turned back around towards his bed. "I am sick," said the king wearily.
Link suddenly looked worried and confused, "Can I get you anything, Father? Have you seen a doctor yet? It's probably just the flu you have."

"I am sick, Link, and it is to far along to help me now. That is why I have called you and your brother here," the king pressed on. "I will need someone to take my place when I am gone, it will not be too long for me now."

Varden would be chosen to be his father's successor. Everyone knew before it was announced. Varden had the wisdom to become king, not to mention the people skills. Link had his stubborn ways and a bad temper. "What do you mean 'not too long for you now'? You're not that old father and you don’t look so sick," Link said still in shock and denial. Varden merely stood beside him in silence. King Aleron coughed uneasily, wondering how he would make his younger son see. "Link, your sight is hindered by your stubborn tendencies. You are not yet matured enough to make for a good king, my son. This is why Varden shall be my successor." Link could see a triumphant grin work its way across his brother's face, but Varden saw his brother watching him and recomposed himself and turned his attention towards Aleron, "Thank you, Father. I'll make sure you don't regret this decision."

"As for you, Link," Aleron said as he said as he saw Link slinking away, "I've made arrangements for you, as well."

Link took a step back and faced his father once again; “Have you?”

“I believe settling down would be the best thing for you.” Aleron said. He narrowed his eyes at his younger son and continued, “Since you haven’t found anyone here in Medoro yet, you need to search elsewhere.”

The young prince grimaced. “But I’m only 19. I’m not old enough to settle down yet!” he mocked.

Varden grinned but stayed quiet and just shook his head. Aleron sighed. “It’s too late; I've already made arrangements for you to stay at the castle of King Harkinian of Hyrule. He is searching for a suitor for his daughter Zelda, but what you decide to do there is your own business." Link bit his lip and tryed to remain calm, he couldnt let his anger out on his father no matter how displeased with this he was. "May I leave now?", Link asked. "You may leave now, your belongings will be ready for you to take in the morning."
